Section through stem of a marestail plantLight micrograph of a transverse section throughthe stem of a marestail plant, showing a singlecircular group of vascular tissues. The appearanceof this stem is typical of that of an aquaticplant, where the amount of vascular tissue isgreatly reduced. Here, a simple ring of xylemvessels (small white circles) is surrounded by amore dense band of phloem. The red band of phloemis enclosed by a single layer of pericycle cellsand an outer endodermis. The surrounding chain-like tissue is the cortical parenchyma. There isno separation of the vascular tissue into bundles.Magnification: x25 at 6x6cm size.
