Earthrise over Moon, Apollo 8Earthrise from the Moon. This photograph was takenduring the Apollo 8 mission of 21-27 December1968. The lunar horizon is about 570 kilometersfrom the spacecraft, whilst the Earth is 384,000kilometers distant. In this view, the Earth isseen with the South Pole as the white patch at theleft end of the terminator. Part of the west coastof Africa may be seen at the right end of theterminator, North and South America being hiddenby cloud at the top of the disc. The lunar terrainin the foreground is near the eastern limb of theMoon, as viewed from Earth.
