Martian geology, Acheron FossaeMartian geology. Mars Express image of ridgesand canyons (technically horsts and grabens) inthe Acheron Fossae region of Mars. These featuresand the larger craters are tens of kilometreswide. The horsts and grabens are caused by ancientmovements in the Martian crust. This area is 1000kilometres north of Olympus Mons, on the edge ofthe Tharsis Bulge, an area uplifted by intensevolcanic activity in the past. This bulging causedthe fractured landscape seen here.
