Bronchiectasis, X-rayBronchiectasis. Coloured bronchogram (X-ray)of a human lung showing bronchiectasis.Bronchiectasis is a lung disorder in which thebronchi and bronchioles (airways of the lungs, red) are permanently dilated and distorted. Inthis case, some of the bronchi have terminalbulbous enlargements, a condition known asfusiform bronchiectasis. Bronchiectasis is mostoften acquired during childhood following chestinfections such as measles, TB, pneumonia andwhooping cough. This damages the lung tissue, making it more susceptible to infections later onin life. A bronchogram is obtained by performing achest X-ray after injection of a contrast medium.
