Legionella sp. bacterium, TEMLegionella sp. bacterium, colouredtransmission electron micrograph (TEM). ThisGram-negative flagellated bacterium is the causeof legionellosis, or Legionnaires' disease. Thebacterium is naturally found in water, and caninhabit reservoirs of water inside buildings, suchas in air conditioning systems. It was one ofthese that led to the first recorded outbreak ofthe disease, at an American Legion convention inPhiladelphia, USA, in 1976. 34 people died in theoutbreak and over 200 required medical treatment.It is from this outbreak that the bacterium takesits name. Infection causes pneumonia and fever,although prompt treatment with antibiotics caneffect a complete cure. Magnification: x15,000when printed 10cm wide.
