L. pneumophila was first identifiedas an agent of disease after a mysterious outbreakof pneumonia caused 29 deaths at an AmericanLegion convention in 1976. The bacterium was foundliving in water tanks, showerheads andair-conditioning systems. The disease causes fatalpneumonic lung damage in the elderly and unfit.Magnification unknown.
