Starch grains, SEMStarch grains. Coloured scanning electronmicrograph (SEM) of starch grains (green) in theparenchyma of a Clematis sp. plant. Starch issynthesised from sucrose, a sugar produced by theplant during photosynthesis, and used as a sourceof energy. It is stored as grains in structurescalled amyloplasts (yellow).
