Botulinum toxin A, molecular modelBotulinum toxin A, molecular model. This highlytoxic protein is produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum . It is one of the most toxicsubstances known. It has its effect by binding tothe junctions between muscles and nerves andpreventing the release of the signalling molecule acetylcholine . This causes paralysis of themuscles, which leads to death through respiratoryfailure. Its action on muscles has led to its usein medicine, mainly in cosmetic procedures, wheretiny doses are injected into overactive muscles.This relaxing of muscles has the effect ofsmoothing wrinkles, and it is widely used for thatpurpose under the brand names Botox and Dysport.
