Africa at nightAfrica at night. Satellite image of city lights at night, centred on Africa. North is at top. Bright areas mark dense urban populations. Most of Africa is dark in comparison with the bright lights of the cities of Europe and the Middle East (across top). The dark areas in Africa mark undeveloped rural areas and uninhabited areas, such as the vast Sahara desert in the north, tropical forests in central Africa, and the savannah and deserts of eastern and southern Africa. The brightest areas in Africa are Cairo and the Nile valley in Egypt (upper right), lights in Nigeria (centre left) and Johannesburg in South Africa (lower right). For this area in the day, see E070/556.
