EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking image captures the pivotal moment in the history of Christianity in Ethiopia, as Saint Philip the Deacon (2nd century AD) shares his newfound faith with the intrigued Ethiopian eunuch, an official in the court of Queen Candace. The biblical account of this encounter is found in the Acts of the Apostles (8:26-40), which recounts how Philip, one of the seven deacons of the early Christian church in Jerusalem, was guided by an angel to the desert road where he encountered the eunuch, who was reading from the book of the prophet Isaiah. Philip, realizing the man was a "man of great authority under Candace queen of the Ethiopians, who had charge of all her treasury, and had heard in Jerusalem about Jesus of Nazareth," asked if he had understood what he was reading. The eunuch replied that he could not, as he had no teacher. Philip then offered to explain the scriptures to him, and the eunuch listened intently as Philip expounded on the meaning of Jesus as the Messiah. Moved by Philip's words, the eunuch requested baptism, and Philip obliged, performing the sacrament in the water of the nearby pool. This event marked the beginning of Christianity in Ethiopia, which would become one of the oldest continuous Christian communities in the world. This evocative print, from the Mary Evans Picture Library, beautifully captures the essence of this significant moment in religious history, with Saint Philip and the Ethiopian eunuch depicted in deep conversation, surrounded by the vast, arid landscape of the Ethiopian desert.
