Born in 1672, Peter ascended to the throne in 1682 following the death of his father, Tsar Alexis I. However, it was not until 1689, after a power struggle with his half-sister Sophia, that Peter assumed full control of the Russian government. Peter I is renowned for his ambitious reforms and modernization efforts, which transformed Russia from a feudal agrarian society into a major European power. He introduced Western European customs, art, and architecture to Russia, and established the Russian Navy, making St. Petersburg a major maritime power.
