Berthe Brabant Bref Charlemagne Franks Husband Pepin

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures Pepin the Short, also known as Pepin III or Pepin the Younger (715-768), a pivotal figure in early European history. As Duke of Brabant and King of the Franks from 752, Pepin played a crucial role in the transition of power from the Merovingian to the Carolingian dynasty. He is best known as the father of Charlemagne, the illustrious king who would go on to expand the Frankish Empire and be crowned Holy Roman Emperor. Born in 715, Pepin was the son of Charles Martel, the powerful mayor of the palace, and Swanahild, the daughter of King Theodric of the Visigoths. In 751, Pepin deposed the last Merovingian king, Childeric III, and was crowned King of the Franks by Pope Stephen II. This marked the end of the Merovingian dynasty and the beginning of the Carolingian era. Pepin's reign was marked by military successes against the Saxons and the Alemanni, as well as the establishment of a more centralized and efficient administration. He also played a significant role in the political and religious affairs of the Frankish kingdom, supporting the reforms of the Church and strengthening the ties between the Church and the secular power. In 754, Pepin married Berthe, the daughter of Desiderius, the King of the Lombards. Their union was an important step in the consolidation of Frankish power in Europe, and their son, Charlemagne, would go on to become one of the most celebrated rulers in European history. Pepin died in 768, leaving behind a powerful legacy that would shape Europe for centuries to come.
