EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a moment in time from the 1870s on board the Training Ship Wellesley, located on the River Tyne at North Shields in Northumberland. Established in 1868 by local businessmen, including James Hall, as a charitable institution to provide shelter for Tyneside waifs and train young men for naval service, the Wellesley became the base for this noble cause from 1874. In this image, we see boys taking part in an exercise drill on the deck of the ship, with the band behind them. The band members, also young trainees, are seen in their smart uniforms, each holding their musical instruments. The boys, dressed in their nautical attire, are focused on their physical training, with rifles and guns at the ready. The Wellesley offered these young men essential skills and education, providing them with the opportunity to escape the poverty and hardships of the workhouses and orphanages of the 1860s. The institution's importance was underscored by the fact that it remained the base for the charity until a fire in 1914, when it was forced to move ashore and become the Wellesley Nautical School. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the vital role that charitable institutions played in the lives of young people during the Victorian era, offering them a chance at a better future through education, training, and the discipline and camaraderie of life aboard a ship. The musical element of the institution is also noteworthy, with the band providing an additional source of pride and accomplishment for the trainees.
