1. Title: The Aerostatic Flight of José Patinha: A Historical Feat of Transporting a Fish Statue from Plazentia, Spain, to Coria on the Aragon River in 1784 2.. This image showcases the remarkable achievement of José Patinha, a Spanish inventor, who made history with his audacious aerostatic flight in 1784. In this photograph, we see the fish statue, which Patinha transported from Plazentia to Coria, a distance of approximately 12 leagues (around 37 miles or 60 kilometers) along the Aragon River. The early 18th century marked a period of great curiosity and innovation in the realm of flight. Patinha, inspired by the Montgolfier brothers' successful hot air balloon launch in 1783, sought to adapt the technology for practical use. He designed an aerostatic balloon, filled with hydrogen gas, which he believed could transport heavy objects over long distances. With the help of a team of skilled artisans, Patinha constructed a large, fish-shaped balloon, which he named "Patinha" (little fish in Portuguese). The fish statue, a symbol of the town of Plazentia, was carefully secured inside the balloon. On a crisp March morning in 1784, Patinha and his team launched the balloon from Plazentia, Spain. The journey to Coria, located on the Aragon River, was fraught with challenges. Patinha skillfully navigated the balloon, using the wind currents and thermal updrafts to guide it towards its destination. After an arduous journey, the balloon finally touched down safely in Coria, where the townsfolk eagerly awaited the arrival of their beloved fish statue. This photograph, a testament to Patinha's ingenuity and perseverance, captures a significant moment in the history of transportation and aviation. The Patinhas Project remains an enduring symbol of human curiosity and the pursuit of the impossible.
