EDITORS COMMENTS
This trade card, dating back to 1662, features the renowned French scientist and philosopher, Blaise Pascal (1623-1662). Pascal's groundbreaking work in mathematics, physics, and philosophy left an indelible mark on the intellectual world of the 17th century. Born in Clermont-Ferrand, France, Pascal showed an early aptitude for mathematics, and by the age of 16, he had already made significant contributions to the field. His most famous mathematical discovery, the Pascal's Triangle, was published in his treatise "Traité du Triangle Arithmétique" in 1653. However, Pascal's intellectual pursuits extended far beyond mathematics. He is perhaps best known for his philosophical work, "Pensées," which explores the nature of God, the human condition, and the meaning of life. Pascal's wager, a famous argument for the existence of God, is also derived from this work. Despite his profound intellectual accomplishments, Pascal's life was marked by personal tragedy. At the age of 16, he was involved in a horseback riding accident that left him with a debilitating injury. Later in life, he suffered a nervous breakdown, which further hindered his ability to work. This trade card, produced during Pascal's lifetime, offers a glimpse into the public perception of the brilliant scientist and philosopher. The image of Pascal, with his intense gaze and flowing beard, conveys a sense of intellectual intensity and depth. The Latin inscription at the bottom of the card, "Quod natura non dat, Salus non praestat," translates to "What nature does not give, health does not restore." This poignant reminder of the fragility of human life adds an intriguing layer of meaning to the image of Pascal. Overall, this trade card is a fascinating historical artifact that offers a glimpse into the life and legacy of one of the most influential thinkers of the 17th century.
