This poignant photograph captures a pivotal moment in the tumultuous history of India and Pakistan, as Muslim women and children make their way across the border into Pakistan during the aftermath of Partition in 1947. The mass migration of millions of Hindus and Muslims across the newly drawn border was marked by widespread violence and atrocities, with reports of brutal attacks on religious minorities in both India and Pakistan. In this image, we see Muslim refugees, many of them women and children, pouring over the frontier border in a desperate bid for safety and asylum. The scene is reminiscent of a flood, with people wading through the water, carrying their meager belongings and clutching their children. The Sikh Jathas, or volunteer militias, were a major force behind the violence against Muslims in Punjab, a region that was divided between India and Pakistan.
