Paracelsus at Basle: A Historic Encounter between Two Medical Pioneers This image depicts the legendary Swiss physician and alchemist, Philippus Aureolus Theophrastus Bombast von Hohenheim, better known as Paracelsus, engaged in a passionate debate with Canon Johann Rudolf Lichtenfels at the University of Basel in 1541. Paracelsus, born in 1493, was a revolutionary figure in the history of medicine, challenging the established medical practices of his time with his unconventional ideas and holistic approach to healing. In this print, Paracelsus, dressed in a simple robe and holding a scroll, is shown fiercely arguing his case, while Canon Lichtenfels, dressed in ecclesiastical attire and holding a staff, listens intently.
