Leo XII, a pope of notoriously reactionary views, presided over this historic event with great pomp and ceremony. Born Annibale Giannuzzi in 1760, Leo XII ascended to the papacy in 1823, following a lengthy and complex papal conclave. Known for his conservative and traditionalist views, Leo XII sought to restore the Catholic Church to its former glory and authority. He was a staunch opponent of the Enlightenment and the French Revolution, which had swept through Europe in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, bringing with it ideas of secularism, democracy, and religious tolerance. Despite his reactionary views, Leo XII's Papal Jubilee was a significant event in the religious and cultural life of Europe.
