EDITORS COMMENTS
In this historic moment captured in the late 1700s, Pope Clement XIII lays the first stone to wall up the Porta Santa, or Holy Door, of St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City, Rome. The closing of the Porta Santa marks the end of the Papal Jubilee, a religious event celebrated every 25, 50, or 100 years, granting plenary indulgence to all who pass through the Holy Door. The tradition of the Papal Jubilee, rooted in the history of Christianity, dates back to the 14th century when Pope Boniface VIII initiated the practice. During the Jubilee, pilgrims from all corners of the world would travel to Rome to seek forgiveness for their sins and to strengthen their faith. As the Pope lays the stone, he signifies the completion of the Jubilee and the beginning of the preparations for the next one. The Porta Santa, which is adorned with intricate designs and religious symbols, is sealed shut until the next Jubilee, when it will be reopened, allowing pilgrims to once again pass through and seek spiritual renewal. This photograph, taken circa 1720, offers a unique glimpse into the rich history of the Catholic Church and the significance of the Papal Jubilee in the religious and cultural landscape of Europe. The image of the Pope closing the Porta Santa serves as a powerful reminder of the enduring faith and devotion that has shaped the course of history. The intricately designed stonework and the solemn expression on the face of the Pope convey the gravity and importance of the occasion. The image is a testament to the enduring power of faith and the unwavering commitment of the Catholic Church to its followers. This photograph is a valuable historical document that offers a glimpse into the past and sheds light on the deep-rooted traditions and beliefs that continue to shape the world today.
