EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the foundations of the Tower of Antonia, an intriguing remnant of Jerusalem's rich history. Located at the eastern end of the city, near the temple and the Pool of Bethesda, the Tower of Antonia was once a formidable military barracks built by Herod the Great in 37 BCE. Named after Herod's patron Mark Antony, this fortress was constructed on the northeastern side of the city, atop the second wall, replacing earlier Ptolemaic and Hasmonean strongholds. The Tower of Antonia was a significant military installation, serving as a base for Roman garrisons and the site of public executions. Its imposing presence loomed over the city, a symbol of Roman power and control. The tower's foundations, as seen in this image, offer a glimpse into the past, revealing the intricate layers of Jerusalem's history. This photograph, taken in 1921 during the British Mandate of Palestine, provides a unique perspective of the Tower of Antonia's ruins. The image captures the wall's weathered stones, the city's bustling activity in the background, and the enduring spirit of Jerusalem's ancient past. The Tower of Antonia stands as a testament to the city's complex history, a reminder of the many civilizations that have shaped its landscape and culture. The Tower of Antonia's foundations, like the city itself, continue to draw visitors from around the world, inviting them to explore the depths of Jerusalem's rich history.
