EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the intensity of Saffo's emotional turmoil as she destroys Apollo's altar in the historic opera "Faone" by Pacini. Saffo, portrayed by the renowned soprano Giuseppina Grassi Saffo, is depicted in a state of profound grief after discovering that her lover Faone has married Climene. The moment is captured mid-act, with Saffo's face contorted in anguish and her hands shattering the marble altar. The opera, first performed in 1840, is based on the ancient Greek myth of Sappho, a poet and priestess of Aphrodite, who was famously in love with the handsome young Phaon. When Phaon married another woman, Sappho's heart was broken, and she is said to have thrown herself into the sea in despair. In Pacini's adaptation, Saffo's grief leads her to a desperate act of revenge against Apollo, the god of music and prophecy, whom she holds responsible for her lover's betrayal. However, as the consequences of her actions unfold, Saffo comes to regret her impulsive decision and is ultimately consumed by remorse. This powerful scene from "Faone" is a testament to the depth of emotion and drama that was a hallmark of Italian opera in the 19th century. The image, taken from Mary Evans Picture Library, captures the intensity and passion of the performance, transporting us back in time to an era of grand music and rich historical storytelling.
