EDITORS COMMENTS
Owen Glendower: The Last Welsh Prince (c. 1359-c. 1416) This evocative image captures the enigmatic figure of Owen Glendower, also known as Owain Glyndwr, the last native Prince of Wales. Glendower was a charismatic and elusive leader who led the last major rebellion against English rule in Wales during the late Middle Ages. Born in the Pennal Valley in Merionethshire, Wales, around 1359, Glendower was a member of the ancient Welsh princely house of Aberffraw. He rose to prominence during the late 14th century, when Wales was under English rule following the conquest of Edward I. Glendower's rebellion began in 1400, and he quickly gained a large following among the Welsh people, who were disillusioned with English rule and yearned for independence. Glendower's rebellion was marked by a series of military successes, including the capture of several English strongholds and the defeat of several English armies. He also issued letters, such as the one depicted in this image, calling on his supporters to join him in the struggle for Welsh independence. The letter, written in Welsh, is addressed to "all the faithful and true men of Wales," and calls on them to "rise up and help us to recover our ancient rights and liberties." Despite his initial successes, Glendower's rebellion ultimately failed. He was captured by the English in 1412, and was never seen or heard from again. The exact circumstances of his death are unknown, but it is believed that he died in captivity. Despite the failure of his rebellion, Owen Glendower remains a symbol of Welsh national pride and resistance against English rule. His legacy continues to inspire generations of Welsh people, and his image is a reminder of the rich and complex history of Wales and its people.
