In this historic photograph, taken in 1928, Jean Albert Lussier is seen emerging from the mist and spray of Niagara Falls with a triumphant smile on his face, despite the evidence of a small dent in the steel sphere that enclosed him during his daring stunt. Lussier, a renowned Canadian stuntman and daredevil, had made a name for himself by performing death-defying feats over some of the world's most famous waterfalls. The image captures a pivotal moment in Lussier's career, as he became the first person to go over Niagara Falls enclosed in a steel sphere. The sphere, which was designed to protect him from the violent waters and rocks below, weighed over 2,000 pounds and was made of quarter-inch thick steel. Despite the risks involved, Lussier was determined to make the attempt. He had already successfully gone over the Falls in a barrel in 1920, but the sphere presented a new and even more dangerous challenge. The sphere was not watertight, and Lussier knew that hitting a rock could potentially shatter it. On the day of the stunt, Lussier was lowered into the sphere and secured inside. He was then winched up to the edge of the Falls, where he was released to begin his descent. The sphere plunged into the churning waters, and Lussier held his breath as he was tossed and turned by the powerful current. Despite hitting a rock during his descent, Lussier emerged from the sphere unscathed, save for the small dent. The successful stunt solidified his reputation as a fearless adventurer and drew international attention to Niagara Falls as a site of daring feats and thrilling challenges.
