1848 1886 Bavaria Bavarian Brother Ludwig Medals Otto Reigned Succeeded

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the regal presence of Otto of Wittelsbach, King of Bavaria from 1886 to 1913. Born on November 1, 1815, Otto succeeded his brother Ludwig II after Ludwig's controversial and eccentric reign came to an end in 1886, following Ludwig's controversial and eccentric reign. Otto, who was born in Munich, was the eldest son of Maximilian II of Bavaria and Caroline of Baden. He was educated at the University of Landshut and served in the Bavarian army before ascending to the throne. During his reign, Otto worked to modernize Bavaria and improve its infrastructure, including the construction of new roads, railways, and schools. He also sought to strengthen Bavaria's position within the German Empire. Otto's reign was marked by several significant events. In 1888, he presided over the opening of the first German parliament in the newly constructed Reichstag building in Berlin. In 1900, he was awarded the Order of the Black Eagle, the highest decoration of the Kingdom of Prussia. And in 1913, he abdicated the throne in favor of his son, Ludwig III, due to ill health. This photograph, taken in 1913, shows Otto in his later years, with a distinguished white beard and a solemn expression. He is dressed in the formal attire of a monarch, wearing the Order of the Golden Fleece around his neck and the Bavarian Order of Saint George on his chest. The photograph captures the weight of responsibility and the gravity of his role as king, as well as the dignity and grace that defined his reign. Otto died on October 4, 1916, at the age of 60, leaving behind a complex legacy as a modernizing monarch and a devoted father. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of his reign and the historical significance of the House of Wittelsbach in Bavarian and German history.
