Otis Himalayanus (female) or Delicious Bustard, Otis deliciosa. Birds from the Himalaya Mountains, engraving 1831 by Elizabeth Gould and John Gould. John Gould was working as a taxidermist, he was known as the bird-stuffer, by the Zoological Society. Goulds fascination with birds from the east began in the late 1820s when a collection of birds from the Himalayan mountains arrived at the Societys museum and Gould conceived the idea of publishing a volume of imperial folio sized hand-coloured lithographs of the eighty species, with figures of a hundred birds. Elizabeth Gould made the drawings and transferred them to the large lithographic stones. They are called Gould plates

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the exquisite beauty of Otis Himalayanus, also known as the Delicious Bustard. The image is an engraving from 1831 by Elizabeth Gould and John Gould, renowned for their exceptional work in natural history illustrations. John Gould, affectionately called the "bird-stuffer" developed a deep fascination with birds from the east when a collection of species from the majestic Himalaya Mountains arrived at the Zoological Society's museum in the late 1820s. Inspired by this encounter, he conceived the idea of creating a volume of imperial folio-sized hand-colored lithographs featuring eighty species and one hundred bird figures. Elizabeth Gould played a crucial role in bringing these avian wonders to life through her intricate drawings that were then transferred onto large lithographic stones. These remarkable works are now famously referred to as "Gould plates". The Otis Himalayanus (female) or Delicious Bustard depicted in this print is truly mesmerizing. Its exotic appearance and elegant tail feathers make it stand out among other bird species. The illustration captures every minute detail with vibrant colors meticulously applied by hand. This photograph not only represents a significant contribution to early nineteenth-century natural history but also serves as a testament to both John and Elizabeth Gould's artistic talents and dedication to showcasing Earth's diverse wildlife.
