EDITORS COMMENTS
This extraordinary organ, known as Tippoo's Tiger, is a unique musical instrument constructed to the order of Tipu Sahib, the Sultan of Mysore from 1782 to 1799. The organ, which dates back to the late 18th century, is not an ordinary musical instrument but rather a representation of the mauling of an East India Company officer. Tipu Sahib, a formidable ruler known for his military prowess and resistance against British colonial rule, commissioned this organ as a symbol of his victory over the British. The organ, which is mid-sized and intricately designed, features a tiger's head at its center, with the body of the tiger forming the organ pipes. The officer's helmet and uniform are depicted on the tiger's back, symbolizing the defeat of the British. The organ's keys are made from ivory and the pipes are made from bamboo. Tipu Sahib was a patron of arts and sciences, and this organ is a testament to his eclectic interests. The organ was discovered in the ruins of Seringapatam, the capital city of the Kingdom of Mysore, after the British victory in the Fourth Anglo-Mysore War in 1799. The organ is now housed in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, where it is a popular attraction for history and music enthusiasts. The Tippoo's Tiger organ is a fascinating historical artifact that tells the story of Tipu Sahib's reign and the complex relationship between the Sultanate of Mysore and the East India Company during the 18th century. It is a reminder of the rich cultural heritage of India and the intriguing history of its past rulers.
