EDITORS COMMENTS
On the March: The West Indian Regiment Crossing a Palm Tree Bridge during the Mendi Expedition, Sierra Leone, 1898 This evocative black-and-white photograph captures a pivotal moment during the Mendi Expedition of 1898, as troops of the West Indian Regiment make their way across a palm tree bridge in Sierra Leone. The Mendi Expedition was a military campaign led by the British to suppress the Hut Tax Rebellion, a widespread uprising against the imposition of a new tax on the local population. The soldiers in this image, dressed in their distinctive uniforms, are shown in a determined march, each man carrying his rifle and equipment. The bridge they are crossing is a testament to the challenging terrain they faced in their mission. The palm trees lining the banks of the river create a lush, tropical backdrop, while the water below is calm and still. The West Indian Regiment, also known as the "Black and Tan" regiment, was made up of volunteers from the British West Indies, many of whom had previously served in the British army or merchant marine. Their participation in the Mendi Expedition was a significant moment in the history of the British military, as it marked the first time that a regiment of predominantly black soldiers was used in a major campaign. Despite their bravery and dedication, the West Indian troops faced discrimination and unequal treatment both during and after the expedition. Many were not given the same pay and benefits as their white counterparts, and some were even denied pensions for their service. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by these soldiers, and the complex history of colonialism and race in Africa during the late 19th century.
