This historic photograph captures the thrilling finish of the Men's 100 meters race at the 1932 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. The image shows three athletes crossing the finishing line in a photo finish: Jesse Owens of the United States in first place with a time of 10.3 seconds, setting a new Olympic record; Ralph Metcalfe, also from the USA, in second place; and Helmut Körnig-Johannes (known as Hans Jonas or simply Jonath) from Germany in third place. The 1932 Olympics were significant for Owens, who went on to win a total of four gold medals in the Games, defying the racist beliefs of Adolf Hitler and Nazi Germany, who had hoped to use the Olympics to promote their ideology. Owens' victories were a powerful symbol of racial equality and athletic excellence. The race took place on the 31st of August 1932, at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. Metcalfe finished just behind Owens with a time of 10.4 seconds, while Jonath crossed the line in 10.5 seconds.
