EDITORS COMMENTS
This historic photograph captures the triumphant moment when Juan Carlos Zabala of Argentina crossed the finish line to win the marathon at the 1932 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. The image shows Zabala, dressed in the blue and white colors of his national team, raising his arms in victory as he collapses in exhaustion on the track. The crowd roars in approval, their faces a mix of awe, excitement, and relief. The 1932 Olympics, held from July 30 to August 14, were the first time the games were held in the United States. The marathon, one of the most grueling events in the Olympics, took place on August 13, 1932. The race began at the Griffith Observatory in the Hollywood Hills and ended at the Coliseum in Downtown Los Angeles. The course was hilly and hot, with temperatures reaching over 90 degrees Fahrenheit. Zabala, a 28-year-old Argentine long-distance runner, was not the favorite to win. He finished the race in a time of 2 hours, 31 minutes, and 52 seconds, edging out American runner Clarence DeMar by just 11 seconds. Zabala's victory was a surprise, but it was a well-deserved one. He had trained rigorously for the race, running long distances in the mountains of Argentina to prepare for the hilly course in Los Angeles. This photograph is a testament to the determination, endurance, and spirit of competition that defines the Olympics. It is a moment frozen in time, capturing the triumph of one man and the excitement of a crowd that came together to celebrate the power of sport and the human spirit.
