He finished the race in a time of 2 hours, 31 minutes, and 52 seconds, edging out American runner Clarence DeMar by just 11 seconds. Zabala's victory was a surprise, but it was a well-deserved one. He had trained rigorously for the race, running long distances in the mountains of Argentina to prepare for the hilly course in Los Angeles.
