1851 1867 Diamond Married Neck Lace Niece Olga Tiara Tsar 1901

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures Queen Olga of Greece, nee Princess Helena of Russia, in the prime of her life during her visit to Greece in 1901. Born in 1851, Olga was the eldest daughter of Grand Duke Constantine Nikolayevich of Russia and Princess Alexandra of Saxe-Altenburg. In 1867, she married King George I of Greece, making her the Queen Consort of Greece and the sister-in-law of Tsar Alexander III of Russia. The image showcases Olga's elegant attire, adorned with a stunning diamond necklace and a magnificent tiara that adds to her regal presence. The necklace, a gift from her husband, is believed to have been a part of the Greek Crown Jewels. The tiara, on the other hand, is a Russian one, a reminder of her noble Russian heritage. Olga's marriage to George I was a significant event in Greek history, as it marked the end of the Bavarian dynasty and the beginning of the Greek royal family's Russian connection. The union brought about a period of peace and stability in Greece, which lasted until the early 20th century. Despite her Russian roots, Olga embraced Greek culture and became a beloved figure among the Greek people. She was known for her charitable works, particularly her support for the education of Greek girls. Her legacy continues to inspire, as she remains an icon of Greek and Russian royal history. This photograph, taken in 1901, captures a moment in time when Olga, the Russian princess, was not only the Queen of Greece but also a bridge between two powerful European empires. It is a testament to her unique role in history and her enduring influence on the Greek and Russian monarchies.
