This evocative photograph captures a moment of respite for the Officers of the 1st Battalion Connaught Rangers during their march from Nazareth in late 1918. Having left Nazareth on November 17, after being stationed there since September, these British military men are seen enjoying a lunch break amidst the ruins of the Holy Land. The tables and chairs, abandoned by the retreating Germans, provide a makeshift dining area in the midst of the war-torn landscape. The Connaught Rangers, part of the British Army during World War 1, had a long and distinguished history, tracing their origins back to 1689. By the time of this march, they had seen extensive action in various theatres of the war, including France and Mesopotamia.
