EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the enigmatic French artist Odilon Redon (1840-1916) in the midst of his creative process. Dressed in a striped shirt and sitting before a wall adorned with intricate floral wallpaper, Redon is deeply engrossed in his work, a sketchbook balanced on his knees and a pencil poised in his hand. The year was 1890, a time when Redon was at the height of his artistic production, experimenting with various mediums including lithography and engraving. Born in Bordeaux, Redon's artistic career began in earnest in Paris, where he studied under Jean-Léon Gérôme and Alexandre Cabanel. However, it was not until the late 1870s that Redon began to develop his distinctive style, characterized by its dreamlike and otherworldly qualities. His works often featured flowers, which he depicted in a highly symbolic and imaginative way, imbuing them with human emotions and psychological depth. Redon's innovative approach to art earned him a reputation as a leading figure in the Symbolist movement. He exhibited his works alongside other Symbolist artists such as Gustave Moreau and Edvard Munch, and his influence can be seen in the works of later artists such as Salvador Dalí and René Magritte. Despite his success, Redon remained a somewhat reclusive figure, preferring to work in solitude and shun the limelight. This photograph offers a rare glimpse into the private world of this enigmatic artist, capturing him in the act of creation and providing a window into the rich and imaginative world of Odilon Redon.
