EDITORS COMMENTS
Obelisks of the Hippodrome, Istanbul: A Testament to Ancient History and Cultural Exchange This photograph showcases the Obelisks of the Hippodrome, an intriguing pair of ancient monuments that now grace the heart of Istanbul, Turkey. The two obelisks, the Egyptian Obelisk of Thutmose III and the 10th century Walled Obelisk, stand as symbols of the rich cultural history and the intricate web of connections that have shaped the city over the centuries. The Egyptian Obelisk of Thutmose III, originally from Deir el Bahri opposite Thebes in Upper Egypt, is a testament to the military prowess of the ancient Egyptian pharaoh. Dating back to around 1549-1503 BC, the obelisk was erected to commemorate Thutmose III's campaigns in Syria. Towering at approximately 60 meters tall and weighing a colossal 800 tonnes, it is a marvel of ancient engineering. However, during its transportation to Constantinople in the 4th century AD, the obelisk broke, leaving only the top third surviving. The Walled Obelisk, built by Emperor Constantine Porphyrogenitus in the 10th century, originally bore gilded bronze plaques that adorned its surface. Unfortunately, these were sacked during the Fourth Crusade, leaving behind the stone core that stands today. These obelisks, now located in the Hippodrome, the ancient athletic and social center of Constantinople, serve as a reminder of the historical significance of Istanbul as a melting pot of cultures and empires. The photograph captures the timeless beauty and the intriguing stories that these monuments hold, inviting us to delve deeper into the fascinating history of this remarkable city.
