EDITORS COMMENTS
This image from the annals of history depicts a pivotal moment during the Norman Conquest of England in 1066. In the print, we see Duke Harold Godwinson of England (left) in submission to his conqueror, William the Conqueror, Duke of Normandy (right). The scene takes place in the city of Bayeux, France, where Harold, having surrendered to William, is about to swear fealty and be knighted by his victorious foe. Harold's journey to Bayeux marked a significant turn in the events leading up to the Norman Conquest. After the tragic death of King Edward the Confessor in January 1066, Harold was elected king by the Witan, the Anglo-Saxon council. However, his claim was contested by Harold's estranged brother Tostig and the Duke of Normandy, William, who believed he had a right to the English throne due to Edward's earlier promises. The ensuing conflict between Harold and William culminated in the Battle of Hastings in October 1066, where Harold's forces were defeated. Wounded and outnumbered, Harold managed to escape the battlefield and fled to Wales, where he was eventually captured by the Normans. In this print, we see Harold, touched by the reliquaries, making a solemn oath of loyalty to William. This act symbolized the formal end of the Anglo-Saxon rule in England and the beginning of the Norman era. Once Harold's fealty was pledged, he was knighted by William, marking the beginning of a new chapter in English history. The print captures the essence of this historical moment, with the two leaders, Harold and William, depicted on horseback, their expressions conveying the weight of the situation. The presence of the reliquaries adds a layer of religious significance to the scene, emphasizing the importance of loyalty and allegiance during this time.
