EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph, King Nicolas I of Montenegro (1841-1921, reigned 1910-1918) is seen in national costume, accompanied by his family, during their exile in France towards the end of the First World War. The image, taken circa 1918, captures the regal figure of the monarch as he takes a leisurely walk with a cane, his wife Queen Milica (1860-1956) and their children following behind. The Montenegrin royal family had been forced into exile after the defeat of the Central Powers in the Balkan Wars and the subsequent invasion of Montenegro by the Austro-Hungarian and Bulgarian forces. During their time in exile, the Montenegrin royals found refuge in France, settling in the city of Lyons. Despite the difficult circumstances, the family managed to maintain a semblance of normalcy, as evidenced by this photograph. King Nicolas, dressed in his traditional Montenegrin attire, is a striking figure against the backdrop of the French countryside. His wife and children, also dressed in national costumes, add to the sense of pride and resilience in the face of adversity. The photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the tumultuous events of the early 20th century and the impact of the Great War on the lives of individuals and families, even those of royal lineage. Despite their exile, the Montenegrin royals remained a symbol of national pride and hope for their people, who continued to rally behind them in their struggle for independence and sovereignty.
