1884 Liberty Scaffolding Shipped Made

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph transports us back in time to the late 19th century, when the iconic Statue of Liberty was brought to life in the heart of Paris before making her historic journey across the Atlantic to New York Harbor. The image showcases the intricate details of the statue's construction, with scaffolding surrounding the partially completed figure of Liberty, her torch held aloft. The Statue of Liberty, a gift from France to the United States, was designed by French sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi and engineered by Gustave Eiffel. The monument's creation began in 1875, but the funding and logistical challenges proved formidable. The solution came in the form of a fundraising campaign led by Joseph Pulitzer's New York World newspaper, which helped raise the necessary funds through public donations. In 1884, the statue's copper sheets were being assembled in Paris, as seen in this photograph. The intricate details of Liberty's face, robe, and torch were being meticulously crafted, with the torch's flame made from an actual flame to capture the authenticity of the design. The statue's torch was later replaced due to deterioration, but the original flame remains on display at the Musée d'Orsay in Paris. Once completed, the statue was disassembled and shipped to New York in 350 individual pieces. The statue arrived in New York Harbor on October 28, 1885, and was reassembled on Bedloe's Island, now known as Liberty Island. The Statue of Liberty was dedicated on October 28, 1886, and has since become an enduring symbol of freedom and democracy, attracting millions of visitors each year.
