EDITORS COMMENTS
In the early hours of June 28, 1880, the long-standing manhunt for the notorious Kelly Gang came to a violent and dramatic end at Glenrowan, Victoria, Australia. The image captures the chaotic scene of the final confrontation between the outlawed group, led by the infamous Ned Kelly, and the determined police force. Ned Kelly and his gang, consisting of his brother Dan, Steve Hart, and Joe Byrne, had been on the run since 1878, following a series of bank robberies and violent crimes. They had taken refuge in a hideout at Glenrowan, disguising themselves in homemade armor made from metal plates and horse blankets. The police, led by Inspector Francis Hare and Sergeant Michael Kennedy, had received intelligence about the gang's whereabouts and planned a surprise attack. As the police approached the hideout, Ned Kelly and his gang opened fire, initiating a fierce gunfight. The photograph depicts the intense moment of the struggle, with police officers returning fire and attempting to subdue the criminals. Three members of the Kelly Gang, including Steve Hart and Joe Byrne, were killed during the shootout. Ned Kelly, who was wounded but not seriously injured, was captured and taken into custody. The image is a testament to the violent and chaotic nature of the confrontation, with the smoke from gunfire obscuring the scene and the intense expressions of the officers and gang members. The capture of Ned Kelly marked the end of the Kelly Gang's criminal reign, and the event remains a significant moment in Australian criminal history.
