EDITORS COMMENTS
In this poignant historical image, we see Natalie, the long-suffering wife of Milan I, being expelled from Serbia in 1891. Milan I, also known as Milan Obrenović III, was the last ruler of the Obrenović dynasty in the Principality of Serbia. His wife, Natalie, was the daughter of King Peter II of Montenegro, making her a member of a rival royal family. Despite the political tensions between them, Natalie was beloved by the Serbian people, particularly the students. When Milan I was overthrown and expelled from the country, the students rallied to protect Natalie and prevent her from being harmed. In this photograph, we see Natalie being escorted by students through the streets, with police officers in hot pursuit. Despite the chaos and turmoil surrounding her, Natalie remains composed and dignified, her expression betraying no signs of fear or despair. The students, who had risked their own safety to protect her, shielded her from the prying eyes of the police and the hostile crowd. This image captures a pivotal moment in Serbian history, when the old order was being replaced by a new one, and the loyalty and devotion of the people towards their queen were on full display. Despite being expelled from her husband's kingdom, Natalie's popularity endured, and she would go on to live out the rest of her days in exile, remembered fondly by the Serbian people. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the complexities of history, and the enduring power of the human spirit in the face of adversity. It is a testament to the resilience of the Serbian people, and the unwavering loyalty they showed towards their queen, even in the most challenging of times.
