Sensing that his end is near, Boris calls for his son Fyodor and declares him his legitimate successor, in an attempt to secure the future of the Russian throne. He rose to power following the mysterious death of Tsar Ivan the Terrible's son, Ivan, in 1598. Boris ruled as regent for Ivan's young son, but eventually seized the throne for himself.
