EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the scene at Mulberry Harbour during the summer of 1944, a pivotal moment in World War II history. The prefabricated Mulberry Harbour, a remarkable engineering feat, is shown bustling with activity as Allied troops and supplies pour in from the English Channel, as if through a regular port. The Mulberry Harbour, also known as Mulberry A and Mulberry B, was a pair of artificial harbours constructed by the British and American forces to facilitate the Normandy landings on June 6, 1944. These harbours, built from prefabricated concrete caissons and floating piers, were designed to provide a deep-water anchorage for Allied supply ships, enabling the delivery of much-needed resources to the troops on the front lines. In this image, we see a Jeep making its way along the beach, surrounded by soldiers and equipment, as the harbour's cranes and winches work tirelessly in the background. The sight of the harbour coming to life with the arrival of troops and supplies was a welcome sight for the Allied forces, who had faced significant challenges in establishing a functional port in the aftermath of the D-Day landings. The Mulberry Harbours played a crucial role in the success of the Allied invasion of Europe, allowing for the delivery of over 2 million tons of supplies and 1.5 million troops in just a few short months. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the ingenuity, determination, and teamwork that defined the Allied effort during World War II.
