EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning image is taken from a Italian Book of Hours, a devotional manuscript produced in Europe around 1490. The intricately illuminated pages of these manuscripts were used for private prayer and reflection, and were treasured possessions of the wealthy and pious. The Book of Hours takes its name from the 'Hours of the Day' and 'Hours of the Virgin Mary' that are contained within its pages. This particular image depicts the 'Hours of the Cross,' a meditation on the Passion of Christ. The central illustration shows the crucifixion, surrounded by scenes from the life of Christ and the sorrows of the Virgin Mary. The illumination is a testament to the artistic and cultural achievements of the late medieval period. The intricate details and vibrant colors are the result of the labor-intensive process of illumination, which involved the application of gold leaf, pigments, and intricate penwork. The communications between the artist and the patron are evident in the details of the illustration. For example, the donor portrait at the bottom left of the page shows a woman in prayer, dressed in the latest fashion and holding a rosary. Her identity is unknown, but her presence in the manuscript indicates that it was a personal devotional object, created for her use. The historical significance of the Book of Hours lies in its role as a bridge between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. The illuminated manuscript tradition continued into the 16th century, but the development of printing technology led to the production of printed books, which were more affordable and accessible to a wider audience. The Book of Hours remains a valuable reminder of the artistic and spiritual traditions of the past, and a testament to the enduring power of the written word.
