The image, taken at Southampton Docks, showcases Irving Berlin, born Israel Baline in 1888, dressed in a stylish suit and hat, with his arm protectively around his newlywed wife, formerly Miss Ellen Mackay. The elegant Mrs. Berlin, dressed in a chic fur coat and hat, gazes up at her husband with a radiant smile. Irving Berlin, who had already made a name for himself as a prolific songwriter in the United States, had come to England to introduce his music to European audiences. His arrival marked a significant moment in music history, as he was one of the first American composers to bring jazz and popular music to the Old World.
