EDITORS COMMENTS
Moses, the Infant Prophet Drifted Upon the Nile's Currents, Discovered by Pharaoh's Daughter This evocative image captures one of the most iconic stories from the Old Testament of the Bible: the discovery of Moses, the Hebrew infant, cast adrift upon the waters of the Nile River. According to the biblical account, Moses was born during a time when Pharaoh had ordered the killing of all Hebrew male infants out of fear that they would grow up to overthrow Egyptian rule. In a desperate attempt to save his life, Moses' mother, Jochebed, crafted a basket made of bulrush and coated it with pitch and tar to waterproof it. She then placed her newborn son in the basket and set it afloat on the Nile, hoping that the currents would carry him to a safe place. Fortunately for Moses, Pharaoh's daughter, Batya, was taking a bath in the Nile at that very moment. She spotted the basket among the bullrushes and, moved by compassion, rescued the infant and raised him as her own. Moses would later grow up to become a significant figure in both Egyptian and Hebrew history, leading the Israelites out of slavery in Egypt and receiving the Ten Commandments from God on Mount Sinai. This photograph, from the extensive collection of Mary Evans Picture Library, offers a glimpse into the rich history and religious significance of this ancient event. The image's warm, golden tones and intricate details of the Nile's waters and the surrounding vegetation transport us back to the banks of the Nile, where the story of Moses' miraculous rescue unfolded thousands of years ago.
