Princeps Collection

Princeps is a genus of cricetid mammals in the family Cricetidae, and are small, mouse-like rodents that inhabit the grasslands and woodlands of Central and South America. They have short legs, long tails, and large ears. Their fur is usually grayish-brown with white underparts. Princeps feed mainly on seeds, fruits, insects, and other small invertebrates, and are active during the day and sleep in burrows at night for protection from predators. Princeps live in colonies of up to 30 individuals where they communicate through vocalizations such as chirping or squeaking noises. Although they are not considered endangered species, their populations are declining due to habitat destruction caused by human activities such as deforestation and agricultural expansion. Conservation efforts must be taken to ensure the survival of these unique animals for future generations to enjoy.
