Mlle Marie de Guise, also known as Mademoiselle Marie de Lorraine et de Guise, was a prominent figure in French history during the late 17th century. Born in 1615, she became the Duchess of Guise and Joyeuse in 1675, following the death of her husband, Henri II, Duke of Guise. In this striking portrait, the Duchess is depicted wearing an elegant brooch adorned with the emblem of Lorraine. The brooch, a symbol of her noble heritage, adds an air of regality to her appearance. Marie de Guise was known for her patronage of the arts, particularly in the field of music. She was an ardent supporter of the composer Marc-Antoine Charpentier, who dedicated several of his works to her. The Duchess's influence extended beyond the artistic sphere.
