1615 1675 1688 Brooch Charpentier Composer Duchess Guise Joyeuse Lorraine Mademoiselle Marie Mlle Patron

EDITORS COMMENTS
Mlle Marie de Guise, also known as Mademoiselle Marie de Lorraine et de Guise, was a prominent figure in French history during the late 17th century. Born in 1615, she became the Duchess of Guise and Joyeuse in 1675, following the death of her husband, Henri II, Duke of Guise. In this striking portrait, the Duchess is depicted wearing an elegant brooch adorned with the emblem of Lorraine. The brooch, a symbol of her noble heritage, adds an air of regality to her appearance. Marie de Guise was known for her patronage of the arts, particularly in the field of music. She was an ardent supporter of the composer Marc-Antoine Charpentier, who dedicated several of his works to her. The Duchess's influence extended beyond the artistic sphere. She was an active participant in the political affairs of the time, using her position to advocate for the interests of her family and the people of Lorraine. Her intelligence, charisma, and diplomatic skills earned her the respect and admiration of many, including King Louis XIV. Despite her many accomplishments, Marie de Guise's life was marked by tragedy. She lost her husband and two of her sons at a young age, and her only surviving son, Léon II, Duke of Guise, was exiled from France in 1688. The Duchess continued to serve as a steadfast advocate for her family and her people, leaving a lasting legacy as a powerful and influential figure in French history.
