1866 Christine Ending Minna Separation Stormy Wagner Wilhelmine Planer

EDITORS COMMENTS
Minna Wagner, born Christine Wilhelmine Minna Planer, was a renowned German actress of the 19th century. She is best known for being the first wife of the famous composer, Richard Wagner. Their marriage, marked by intense passion and stormy emotions, began in the 1840s and ended in a separation in 1866. Minna was born on February 2, 1810, in Dresden, Saxony. She made her acting debut in 1828 at the Dresden Court Theatre. Her exceptional talent and beauty quickly gained her recognition, and she became a popular actress in Germany. Richard Wagner, a composer and theater director, met Minna in 1836 while she was performing in Riga. They fell deeply in love, and Wagner left his wife and family to be with Minna. They married in 1836, and their union produced six children. However, their marriage was far from blissful. Minna was known for her fiery temperament, and Wagner's infidelities and financial troubles added to the tension. Their relationship was further complicated by Wagner's obsession with the opera "Tannhäuser," which he believed would be Minna's greatest role. Despite the challenges, Minna remained devoted to Wagner and continued to support him throughout his career. However, in 1866, their marriage reached a breaking point. Minna left Wagner and returned to her family in Dresden, taking their children with her. This photograph captures Minna Wagner in her later years, her expressive face and piercing eyes reflecting the intensity and passion that defined her life. Despite the stormy marriage, Minna's legacy as a talented actress and Wagner's muse endures, making her an important figure in the history of German theater and music.
