EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking photograph captures a moment in time with three influential figures of Austrian history: Prince Clemens Lothar Wenzel von Metternich, Prince of the Holy Roman Empire and Austrian statesman, and his two advisors, Count Franz von Unger and Count Karl von Clemens. The image was taken in 1859, towards the end of Metternich's long and illustrious career. Born in 1773, Metternich served as the Austrian Chancellor for over 40 years, making him one of the longest-serving statesmen in European history. He is best known for his role in maintaining the balance of power in Europe during the Congress of Vienna in 1815, following the Napoleonic Wars. Metternich's diplomatic skills and political acumen helped shape Europe's political landscape for decades. Count Franz von Unger, a Hungarian nobleman, was a trusted advisor to Metternich, serving as the Austrian Minister to the Ottoman Empire from 1852 to 1859. Unger played a significant role in the negotiations between Austria and the Ottoman Empire, which led to the recognition of Austrian sovereignty over the Banat of Temeswar. Count Karl von Clemens, also a trusted advisor to Metternich, was the Austrian Minister to the Russian Empire from 1856 to 1861. Clemens played a crucial role in maintaining the alliance between Austria and Russia during a time of political instability in Europe. The photograph captures the three men in formal attire, seated around a table, deep in conversation. The serious expressions on their faces suggest the weight of the matters they are discussing. The image offers a glimpse into the inner workings of Austrian politics during a pivotal moment in European history. The photograph is a testament to the enduring influence of these three men and their contributions to the political landscape of their time.
