EDITORS COMMENTS
This illustration depicts the intrepid crew of the Jackson-Harmsworth Polar Expedition in action, hunting walrus near the shores of Franz Josef Land in 1896. The Jackson-Harmsworth Expedition, led by English explorers George Jackson and Edward Harmsworth, had initially set out with the ambitious goal of making an attempt to reach the North Pole. However, their plans were disrupted when they encountered Fridtjof Nansen and his companions of the Fram expedition. Nansen, a renowned Norwegian explorer, had already made history by reaching further north than any other human being in the Arctic at that time. Realizing the danger and futility of Jackson's attempt, Nansen advised him against it. Jackson, ever the gracious host, welcomed Nansen and his weary group into his camp and offered to convey them back to safety. In this image, the Jackson-Harmsworth crew can be seen in their boats, armed and focused, as they take aim at the walrus that litter the icy shores. The hunting party, dressed in heavy furs and armed with rifles, display the determination and skill required to survive in the harsh Arctic conditions. The illustration serves as a testament to the camaraderie and adaptability of these early polar explorers, who, despite their differing goals, came together in the face of adversity. This historical image, sourced from Mary Evans Prints Online, provides a unique glimpse into the lives of these brave explorers and their experiences in the Arctic. It is a reminder of the rich history of polar exploration and the spirit of adventure that continues to inspire us today.
