Proteus Bluebird, the car in which Donald Campbell broke the World Automobile Speed

Proteus Bluebird, the car in which Donald Campbell broke the World Automobile Speed Record has has now made its last run, at 5 mph, at RAF Station, Debden, Essex, 19th June 1966.
Campbell was due to give a demonstration run at a gala there, but 5 days earlier, the car was badly damaged when, with racing driver Peter Bolton at the controls, it smashed through a wooden fence and hedge at 100 mph, sailed 10ft in the air across the Cambridge Chelsford road, and finally spun across a field for 200 yards.

EDITORS COMMENTS
Proteus Bluebird, the iconic car that propelled Donald Campbell into the annals of history as he shattered the World Automobile Speed Record, takes its final nostalgic ride at RAF Station, Debden. This print captures a moment frozen in time on June 19th, 1966. Originally scheduled for a thrilling demonstration run during a gala event, fate had other plans for this magnificent machine. Just days before the anticipated showcase, Proteus Bluebird suffered severe damage when it careened through a wooden fence and hedge at an astonishing speed of 100 mph. Defying gravity's grip, it soared ten feet above the Cambridge Chelsford road before gracefully landing and spinning across a field for an impressive distance of 200 yards. In this remarkable image, we see Tonia Campbell tenderly cradling a cuddly toy version of her husband's beloved land speed mascot. The bluebird symbolizes hope and determination; qualities that undoubtedly fueled Donald Campbell's pursuit of greatness. As we gaze upon this snapshot from the swinging sixties, let us remember not only the record-breaking achievements but also appreciate the indomitable spirit that drove these pioneers forward. This photograph is more than just an homage to speed and power; it encapsulates human ambition reaching new heights against all odds.
