Sinking of the ship Falaba The sinking of the "Falaba"
Sinking of the ship Falaba
The sinking of the " Falaba". Passengers onboard the stricken liner search for available life boats. The British liner " Falaba" was torpedoed by a German U-boat in the waters around Britain, an event important for two main reasons. Firstly, it marked the escalation of the U-boat campaign against shipping around the British coast. Secondly and perhaps more importantly, it caused the first official death of a US citizen. The man, Leon C. Thrasher, drowned after jumping from the sinking ship. His death caused outrage in the US, the government calling for " Strict accountability". Although the US had feared such an event for some time, it focussed attention onto the potential threat to their citizens abroad, a threat became far more real with the sinking of the liner the " Lusitania" a short while later.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the tragic sinking of the ship Falaba during World War I. Passengers onboard desperately search for available lifeboats as chaos ensues. The British liner fell victim to a German U-boat attack in the waters surrounding Britain, marking a significant escalation in the U-boat campaign against shipping along the British coast. However, this event holds even greater historical importance due to its connection with Leon C. Thrasher, an unfortunate US citizen who became the first official casualty of his country during the war. Leon Thrasher tragically drowned after bravely jumping from the sinking ship in an attempt to save himself. His untimely death sparked outrage across America, leading their government to demand strict accountability for such acts of aggression on innocent civilians at sea. The sinking of Falaba not only intensified fears within the United States but also shed light on the potential threat faced by American citizens abroad. This threat would become all too real when another passenger liner, Lusitania, met a similar fate shortly after this incident. Dated 28th March 1915 and captured by Daily Mirror's lens, this poignant photograph serves as a reminder of both human resilience and tragedy amidst one of history's most devastating conflicts – World War I.
